5 Best FREE Penpal Sites / Language Exchange Sites in the World
By DAN FORTEZA
I have been traveling abroad in the past four years and have met great people through penpal and language exchange sites. Yes, I started making international friends through online means before even traveling outside of my home country.
That’s why in this blog, I’ll be sharing with you the best free penpal sites or language exchange sites that worked for me best!
I remember way back in 2013, my first penpal friend was Chisako from Fukuoka, Japan. She even sent me some of her beautifully sketched animes.
Also, check out the countries I have visited so far!
As long as I can remember, I have had 3 or 4 snail mail pen pals. Snail mail simply means you correspond through handwritten letters that require stamps and the use of the post office. Isn’t that exciting?
I’m sure you’re very much interested in connecting and interacting with people all around the globe.
And admit it. Sometimes we feel lonely in our own cities so making friends abroad might make us feel much better.
If you want something a little modern, the following five (5) websites are for you who are looking for a cyber or online pen pal to learn about new cultures, languages, traditions and simply make new friends. The best thing about them is they’re FREE!
TOP 5 FREE PENPAL SITES / LANGUAGE EXCHANGE SITES
ConnectPals has become by far the largest and most popular free penpal and language exchange site on the web in 2019. Besides that, it also has become the go-to site for finding friends at any travel location. But still, its original mission remains the same: to help people meet friends from all over the world for free!
Interpals is a great site for building relationships with people around the world! Having friends in other countries becomes extremely convenient when you are traveling and need a place to stay! Plus, meeting someone from another country gives you the opportunity to learn about another culture through the eyes of a new friend!
Pen Pal World is another penpal website that is free and allows you to directly contact other people seeking international pen pals. All of the initial interaction happens through their site so none of your personal information is publicly displayed. Once you connect with a good match, you can choose to swap more information and begin writing letters.
MY LANGUAGE EXCHANGE
If you are currently learning a second language and want some extra practice, My Language Exchange is a great site for you! You can search and select a penpal from the country, and perhaps even the city, of your choice! Then, practice writing in your foreign language and gain a new friend! It’s a win-win!
Penpals Now is another amazing free penpal website. This site allows you to post your information so that others can find you. If you don’t want to post your information publicly, you can choose to search through their engine for someone who matches what you are looking for.
So there you have it. Although it is great to have some international friends especially when traveling abroad, still…take extra caution when dealing with people in the online world.
I have mostly used both Interpals and Penpal World and have come across a couple of profiles pretending to be someone else. You’ll never know if they truly are what they say.
Good luck with finding your new penpal friends! I’m sure you’ll find one any time soon! If there are any free penpal websites and language exchange sites that I’ve missed that should be in the top 5, let me know in the comment section below.

Hmm, how is this page a truthful / useful review? I’ve tried ConnectPals, which claims to be #1, the site is slow, unattractive, desert. How can it be #1 and Interpals #2, despite Interpals’ overwhelming flaws?
